Andrew Botha said he acted instinctively  when he looked back to see if the pro surfer had recovered from a bad wipeout. He saw the surfboard toombstoning.  He swam over and recovered the passed out, blue faced surfer at the bottom of the reef.  Then instincts kicked in again when he gave CPR and hit him in the chest while treating water and getting pounded by waves.  He knew the surf was pushing them to shore and waited for more help to arrive.
